Eknath Shinde–Ashok Kharat case: Maharashtra probe widens as opposition escalates attack
Sprouts News Exclusive: The Ashok Eknath Kharat controversy in Nashik has intensified Maharashtra’s political climate, with leaders trading allegations. Amid this, claims have emerged that Ashok Kharat guided Eknath Shinde’s move to Guwahati, further fuelling political tensions and debate.
The Ashok Eknath Kharat controversy has taken a sharply political turn in Maharashtra, with allegations touching Eknath Shinde, Deepak Kesarkar, Rupali Chakankar and other public figures as scrutiny intensifies.
The Ashok Kharat case has emerged as one of Maharashtra’s most explosive controversies, combining serious criminal allegations, political accusations and widening demands for a deeper probe into his reported network.
At the centre of the storm is Ashok Kharat, described by critics and political opponents as a self-styled godman linked to occult practices, exploitation allegations and suspected wider criminal activity.
Opposition leaders have alleged that Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde had reported proximity to Ashok Kharat, including visits, photographs and alleged religious association through the Kamakhya-linked narrative now circulating politically.
Those claims remain allegations unless established by documentary, digital or prosecutorial evidence. However, the issue has intensified after public statements from Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and multiple opposition figures.
Eknath Shinde, Deepak Kesarkar and the widening political allegations
Former MP and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Vinayak Raut has alleged that Ashok Kharat played a role in shaping Eknath Shinde’s political path, including the Guwahati episode.
Vinayak Raut also alleged that Deepak Kesarkar acted as a bridge between Eknath Shinde and Ashok Kharat, and demanded a Special Investigation Team inquiry into Deepak Kesarkar.
According to Vinayak Raut, if Ashok Kharat were to speak in full, several ministers could be exposed. That statement has added fresh political heat to an already volatile matter.
Sushama Andhare, another Shiv Sena (UBT) leader, has also demanded scrutiny of political links, including whether the Home Department will examine all reported contacts with Ashok Kharat.
She has publicly raised questions over photographs involving Eknath Shinde, Ashok Kharat, Amit Shah, Jayant Patil and Milind Narvekar, while also seeking scrutiny of call detail records.

Rupali Chakankar, police seizures and SIT-led investigation
The controversy deepened after photographs of Rupali Chakankar with Ashok Kharat surfaced, adding to public pressure and intensifying criticism over the political and social legitimacy extended to him.
Police action has given the case sharper legal weight. Ashok Kharat was arrested after a 35-year-old woman accused him of repeated sexual assault, and an SIT is now handling the investigation.
IPS officer Tejaswi Satpute is reportedly leading the SIT. Investigators are also examining a much wider body of material allegedly seized during the probe.
According to reported police information, 58 objectionable videos involving women were recovered, though investigators suspect the total number could exceed 300.
Police have also reportedly seized a pistol and suspicious documents from Ashok Kharat’s farmhouse, while a Nashik court remanded him to police custody until March 29.

Serious claims, courtroom arguments and pressure for wider inquiry
During court proceedings, government lawyers reportedly argued that there was suspicion of human sacrifice, sharply escalating the gravity of the allegations against Ashok Kharat.
Prosecutors also referred to a black revolver, 31 live cartridges and five used cartridges allegedly recovered from his possession, raising further questions about coercion, fear and possible criminal intimidation.
Separate allegations have also drawn in names including Rupali Chakankar, Sunil Tatkare, Saroj Ahire, Jayant Patil, Nilesh Lanke, Milind Narvekar and Bachhu Kadu, largely over reported photographs or contact claims.
Deepak Kesarkar’s name has drawn repeated attention because of multiple reported photographs, including one from November 2022 with Eknath Shinde and Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil at Eshaneshwar temple in Sinnar.
Opposition leaders have alleged that Deepak Kesarkar was deeply influenced by Ashok Kharat and that Ashok Kharat may have interfered in official matters through political access. These remain allegations.
What happens next in the Ashok Kharat controversy
The political impact could widen further if investigators establish documented links between Ashok Kharat and public figures through digital records, financial trails, witness testimony or other admissible evidence.
For now, the strongest reportable position is this: allegations by Vinayak Raut, Sushama Andhare and other opposition leaders have intensified pressure, while the police and SIT continue their investigation.
