Adani in the Spotlight: Cross-Border Investigations Unmask Cronyism and Fraud

The Adani Group, one of India’s largest conglomerates, is confronting a series of escalating legal challenges and international investigations following allegations of extensive fraud and corruption.

* U.S. SEC Seeks India’s Assistance

On February 18, 2025, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) formally requested assistance from Indian authorities in serving legal documents to Gautam Adani, the founder of the Adani Group, and his nephew, Sagar Adani. Both are accused of securities fraud and involvement in a $265 million bribery scheme aimed at securing favorable solar energy contracts in India. The SEC’s move underscores the transnational dimension of the investigation and highlights the necessity for cross-border cooperation in addressing complex financial fraud cases.

* Allegations of Bribery and Fraud

The allegations against the Adani Group are multifaceted. U.S. authorities have charged Gautam Adani and his associates with orchestrating a scheme to bribe Indian officials to obtain advantageous contracts for Adani Green Energy, the conglomerate’s renewable energy arm. These actions purportedly involved misleading U.S. investors about the company’s anti-corruption measures, thereby violating securities laws. The indictment also names Vneet Jaain, the former CEO of Adani Green Energy, as a co-defendant.

* Domestic and International Repercussions

The ramifications of these allegations are extensive. Domestically, opposition parties in India have intensified their criticism of the Adani Group’s close ties with the government, accusing it of engaging in crony capitalism. Internationally, the conglomerate’s reputation has suffered, leading to significant financial consequences. Notably, the Science Museum in the United Kingdom faced backlash for accepting over £4 million in donations from Adani Green Energy, prompting internal disputes and public protests.

* Adani Group’s Response

In response to the mounting allegations, the Adani Group has categorically denied any wrongdoing. The conglomerate has labeled the accusations as “baseless” and asserts that they are part of a deliberate attempt to tarnish its reputation. The company has expressed its intention to vigorously defend its practices and is exploring legal avenues to challenge the charges.

* Hindenburg Report and Previous Controversies

The latest legal troubles come on the heels of the 2023 Hindenburg Research report, which accused the Adani Group of stock manipulation and accounting fraud. The report triggered a massive selloff in Adani stocks, wiping out billions in market value and leading to global scrutiny over the conglomerate’s financial dealings. Despite strong denials from Adani, the controversy led to a series of regulatory probes and calls for greater oversight of the group’s financial practices.

While the Adani Group has since attempted to rebuild its reputation and reassure investors, these fresh fraud allegations have reignited concerns about corporate governance within the company. With multiple investigations now unfolding across different jurisdictions, the conglomerate faces significant challenges in restoring market confidence and maintaining its business operations both in India and internationally.

* Sprouts Team Stands for True Nationalism

The Sprouts Team stands firm on true nationalism. We strongly oppose the Prime Minister’s policy of granting excessive favors to fraudster Gautam Adani. The allegations against the Adani Group not only tarnish India’s global reputation but also expose the dangers of crony capitalism. We believe in transparency, accountability, and justice, and we call upon the government to take decisive action against corporate malpractice, ensuring that the interests of the nation and its people are safeguarded above all else.
