Flash Flood Nightmare at Machail Yatra Starting Point
JAMMU & KASHMIR — A sudden and massive cloudburst this afternoon in the remote Chashoti area of Paddar, Kishtwar district, triggered devastating flash floods just as pilgrims were preparing to begin the revered Machail Mata Yatra. Tragically, officials now fear up to 10 people may have lost their lives in the chaos.
Rescue Efforts Kick into Overdrive
Deputy Commissioner Pankaj Sharma confirmed:
“A flash flood has occurred at Chashoti … Rescue operations have been started.”
Rescue and relief teams—from the NDRF, SDRF, local police, and army—have been deployed urgently. Helicopters are on standby to assist with evacuations and medical aid.

Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh called the situation “massive” and warned it could lead to “substantial casualties.” He confirmed immediate action is underway, including damage assessment and medical management.
Meanwhile, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed deep anguish, offered condolences to affected families, and prayed for the injured. He directed civil, police, Army, NDRF, and SDRF units to intensify rescue and relief efforts.
Leader of Opposition and local MLA Sunil Kumar Sharma emphasized quick coordination and the need for stronger safety measures along the yatra route.

The sacred Machail Mata Yatra has been suspended, with all resources being diverted for rescue operations in the cloudburst-affected area.
