The exclusive information has been obtained through an RTI query to the Sprouts team. In a significant move under the Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP), an additional 56 acres of land in Mulund have been earmarked for the rehabilitation of ineligible Dharavi residents. This new allocation supplements the previously allotted 58.5 acres of salt pan land in Mulund, bringing the total to 114.5 acres designated for this purpose. The process of transferring this additional land to the DRP is expected to be completed by June 2025.
The DRP plans to relocate ineligible residents from Dharavi to areas outside the slum, including Mulund, Kurla, Kanjurmarg, Borivali, and other locations. Land parcels are being allocated incrementally to facilitate this relocation. Recently, the payment process for the 58.5 acres of salt pan land in Mulund was completed in October 2024, as revealed through an RTI query. Now, efforts are underway to allocate an additional 56 acres in Mulund for the project.
The additional 56 acres comprise 10 acres from the Mulund Octroi Naka’s 18-acre plot and 46 acres from the Mulund dumping ground. This brings the total land in Mulund allocated for the rehabilitation of ineligible Dharavi residents to 114.5 acres.

Despite the government’s plans, there is significant opposition from Mulund residents regarding the allocation of local land for Dharavi’s rehabilitation. Hundreds of residents recently staged a protest against the resettlement of project-affected persons (PAPs) on a plot near Kelkar College. The protesters carried placards opposing the rehabilitation of PAPs from Dharavi, expressing concerns about the strain on local infrastructure. They pointed out that the construction of multiple high-rise buildings for PAPs would exacerbate existing issues related to hospitals, schools, roads, sewerage lines, water supply, and parking facilities.
Mulund’s current population is approximately 150,000. The potential addition of 200,000 to 300,000 residents from Dharavi raises concerns about overburdening local infrastructure and transforming Mulund into a densely populated area akin to Dharavi. Local residents have expressed their intent to continue opposing the government’s land allocation plans for the DRP.
