Girgaon Chokes: Rampant Construction Dust Sparks Health Crisis, Political Showdown

Girgaon is battling a dangerous public health emergency as uncontrolled construction dust engulfs the neighbourhood. A Sprouts News SIT investigation reveals widespread respiratory and skin ailments, especially among children and senior citizens. Basic pollution-control practices such as water sprinkling and debris netting are ignored, while trucks carry debris uncovered through crowded lanes. With air quality plummeting and illnesses rising, local leaders like Vijay Shetty have warned the BMC of imminent mass protests unless urgent action is taken.

Mumbai’s Girgaon area faces a severe pollution crisis due to unchecked construction. As respiratory illnesses surge, RPI leader Vijay Shetty warns of mass agitation against BMC and polluters. An exclusive ground report.

Girgaon in South Mumbai is choking under a blanket of construction dust. Unregulated demolition and building activity have created a severe public health hazard. Local residents report a sharp increase in respiratory and skin diseases.

The situation is particularly dire for children and senior citizens. The Sprouts News Special Investigation Team visited the area to assess the crisis. The findings reveal a systematic failure of environmental governance.

A Perilous Environment: Dust and Disease

Girgaon’s air quality has deteriorated to dangerously unhealthy levels. Ongoing construction projects flout basic pollution control norms. Essential measures like water sprinkling and safety netting are conspicuously absent.

Trucks carrying debris move uncovered through narrow lanes. This spreads a constant cloud of fine particulate matter. The relentless noise from heavy machinery adds to the residents’ misery.

Local families are forced to keep their windows shut permanently. Despite this precaution, fine dust particles infiltrate homes. The result is a steep rise in asthma, bronchitis, and allergic reactions.

Doctors in the locality confirm a noticeable surge in patient visits. They primarily cite complaints related to air pollution exposure. The long-term health impacts are a growing concern for the community.

Political Pressure Mounts: RPI Leader Issues Ultimatum

The Republican Party of India (Athavale) has entered the fray. Vijay Shetty, the party’s Mumbai President for the environment wing, has taken up the cause. He has filed formal complaints with multiple civic and police authorities.

His letters demand immediate action against builders and contractors. He alleges a blatant disregard for environmental and construction laws. The authorities have been accused of turning a blind eye to these violations.

In a strong statement, Shetty warned of intensified public agitation. He declared, “Citizens in Girgaon lack safe air to breathe. The administration’s negligence is unacceptable.” He has given the BMC and police an ultimatum for action.

The copies of these complaints are with Sprouts News. They are addressed to the BMC Commissioner, Mumbai Police, and the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB). This formal political pressure marks a significant escalation in the issue.

Citizens’ Outcry: “The Administration is Asleep!”

Frustration and anger are boiling over among Girgaon’s residents. Local citizen groups have slammed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for its inaction. They claim repeated complaints have yielded no meaningful inspections or penalties.

“The dust is so pervasive we have to wear masks inside our own homes,” one affected resident shared. “Rules for containing demolition dust exist, but no one follows them here.”

The community feels betrayed by the authorities’ persistent silence. They believe powerful builders are being shielded at the cost of public health. This perceived collusion has deepened the trust deficit between citizens and the civic body.

The fear of respiratory illnesses now dominates daily life. Parents are increasingly worried about their children’s long-term health. The social and economic toll of this pollution crisis is mounting.

A Looming Agitation and The Search for Solutions

The threat of a large-scale protest now hangs over the city. If the situation does not improve immediately, the RPI (Athavale) will lead the charge. They plan to unite local citizens and environmental activists for a major demonstration.

A formal memorandum will be submitted to the BMC in the coming days. It will demand immediate and concrete remedial measures. The political party is preparing for a prolonged confrontation on this issue.

While the MPCB has reportedly initiated some inspections, progress is slow. No significant punitive action against violators has been made public yet. This lack of visible enforcement has further fueled public anger.

The Girgaon pollution crisis is a stark reminder of urban India’s growing environmental challenges. It underscores the urgent need for stricter enforcement and accountable governance. The health of a historic Mumbai neighbourhood hangs in the balance.
