The historic Mahadev temple, located at the confluence of the Kalu and Doifode rivers in Shri Kshetra Sangameshwar, Murbad taluka, has been a revered site for over 150 years. Thousands of devotees visit this sacred place every year on Mahashivratri to offer prayers and perform rituals. Additionally, the temple premises host several small and large vendors during the festival.
However, in a shocking and illegal move, the temple’s spire was demolished just eight days before Mahashivratri without obtaining the necessary permissions from the Department of Archaeology or the Public Works Department (PWD). According to the Sub-Divisional Officer of the PWD in Murbad, no official order was issued for the demolition or any related work. Despite prior approvals being revoked, the unlawful demolition was still carried out.
This act of destruction not only disrupted the traditional Mahashivratri celebrations but also deeply wounded the religious sentiments of thousands of devotees from Murbad and Shahapur talukas. Many have expressed their anguish and outrage, demanding stringent action against the officials and contractors responsible for this unjustified demolition of a historical temple.
