The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has entrusted the recruitment process for the Junior Engineer (JE) and Secondary Engineer (SE) posts in 2024 to the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS). However, concerns are mounting over the transparency and security of the examination process. IBPS does not have its own examination centers across Maharashtra, leading to the selection of private computer centers for conducting the exams. This has raised alarms, as past examinations conducted in some of these private centers have been marred by corruption and malpractice. Scandals in recruitment processes for departments such as the Police, Forest Department, MHADA, Women and Child Development (WCD), and Talathi have exposed the vulnerabilities of private centers.

Students appearing for this crucial recruitment examination are now demanding that the next phases be conducted at TCS iON Digital Centers which are government-empaneled and known for their robust security measures. The first phase of the exam, held on February 9, was conducted at private centers, fueling concerns of possible misconduct. Given that this recruitment drive is taking place after a gap of nearly five years, aspirants are seeking a foolproof process that upholds the integrity of the examination.

• Unfair Allotment of Exam Centers

Despite students selecting their preferred centers while filling out application forms, many were allotted different centers, often in remote locations. This deviation from their choices has led to apprehensions that fraudulent activities may take place. Historical records indicate that private examination centers have been epicenters of large-scale digital copying, rigging, and unfair means, raising a legitimate fear of similar occurrences in the BMC recruitment process. The allocation of private centers, despite available government-affiliated alternatives, has been seen as an injustice to thousands of aspirants.

• Call for Government Intervention

The student community is urging the government to take immediate action and shift the upcoming phases of the recruitment exam to TCS iON Digital Centers. Conducting exams at these centers would not only ensure a fair selection process but also restore trust in the recruitment system. Given the past record of fraudulent activities at private centers, the demand for secure and government-regulated centers is justified.

“If another scam occurs, will the commissioner take responsibility for it?

By conducting exams again at private centers where previous exams were canceled due to scams, what message does the Mumbai Municipal Corporation want to send to the millions of young men and women in the state?”
