  • The rainfall so far since August 18–19 is staggering: over 500 mm in just 84 hours, with two confirmed deaths and one person still missing. Chaos reigns with severe waterlogging, transport paralysis, and sustained alerts.
  • Highlighting resilience in the face of disaster, Indian Railways reassures commuters: “Won’t stop, won’t pause”—local trains are continuing operations despite the downpour.
  • The city grapples with a “waterworld” scenario—flooded streets, transportation gridlock, and power outages are the norm. Authorities, residents, and volunteers band together to help stranded commuters and even ferry schoolchildren in boats. IMD Sound the Alarm: Red Alert Hits Mumbai, Raigad & Beyond

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert across Mumbai, Raigad, Thane, and Palghar—warning of very heavy to extremely heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong gusty winds. The forecast predicts unrelenting rain today and potential flash floods.

Tragedy Strikes: Vikhroli Landslide Kills Two

Earlier on August 16, a fatal landslide hit the Jankalyan Society in Vikhroli. Heavy rain caused debris to crush a hut, tragically killing Suresh Mishra (50) and Shalu Mishra (19), while Aarti (45) and Ruturaj (20) were severely injured and are stable at Rajawadi Hospital.

Mumbai’s Deluge: Over 500 mm Rain, Cities in Chaos

Between August 18–19, the city got more than 500 mm of rain in just 84 hours—marking the first red alert of the monsoon season. Flooded roads, traffic mayhem, and train disruptions are widespread. Mumbai University postponed exams, while neighboring areas closed schools and colleges.

Travel Gridlock: Flooded Roads, Trains, and Flights Affected

  • Water logging in Mumbai today has hit hard—roads, underpasses, and subway lines are submerged.
  • Despite the deluge, local train services continue—Indian Railways vows, “Won’t stop, won’t pause.”
  • Mumbai airport faced disruptions, with airlines like IndiGo urging travelers to check flight status before heading out.
  • BMC has shut schools and government offices citywide and urged private companies to allow work-from-home to reduce congestion.

What’s Next? Weather Outlook & City Resilience

The weather forecast for Mumbai remains grim. The IMD may downgrade alerts later in the week—from red to orange, then yellow—but for now, citizens are urged to stay alert and prioritize safety.

Every neighbourhood from Dadar to Chembur is working hard amidst adversity: children are being rescued, boats are ferrying stranded commuters, and traffic officers work to keep essential lanes open. Mumbai’s spirit shines through this downpour.
