The Bombay High Court on Friday issued a notice to the Maharashtra government, asking when it plans to officially designate the historically significant 71 Savarkar Sadan in Shivaji Park, Dadar, as a heritage site. The court has directed the state to submit a response under oath. The bench, comprising Justice Atul Chandurkar and Justice Dr. Neela Gokhale, instructed that no structural changes be made to the property until further orders.
The next hearing is scheduled for June 13, 2025. The court also issued a notice to the central government regarding the demand to declare Savarkar Sadan a national monument. This directive follows mounting concerns about the preservation of key landmarks tied to India’s freedom movement.

Sprouts News Highlights Civic Inaction Since 2010 Proposal
The petition was filed by the Abhinav Bharat organization, which emphasized the need to include Savarkar Sadan in the official list of historical monuments. It urged both the state and central governments to declare the building a national memorial in recognition of its association with freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar.
Notably, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had submitted a proposal in 2010 to confer heritage status on the building. Despite initial responses and calls for objections and suggestions, no concrete action was taken. The petition accuses the Maharashtra government of prolonged inaction, which has allegedly led to the deterioration of the structure.

Activists Point to Heritage Tag Disparity
The petition also highlighted that while Mumbai’s Jinnah House has already been granted heritage status, no such recognition has been given to Savarkar Sadan, despite its central role during the Indian independence struggle. Meetings and revolutionary planning associated with the freedom movement reportedly took place at this location.
The Chief Minister’s Office has, according to the petition, sought clarification from the Urban Development Department regarding the heritage status. The disparity in government treatment between various historical sites has sparked a broader debate on the politicization of heritage recognition—an issue now under court examination.
