In a groundbreaking move to address the rising human-wildlife conflict in Maharashtra, the state government is planning to establish a state-of-the-art wildlife rescue and rehabilitation centre named ‘Suryatara’, modeled after the acclaimed ‘Vantara’ facility developed by Anant Ambani in Jamnagar, Gujarat.
Forest Minister Ganesh Naik made the official announcement during a press conference held in Nagpur on Thursday. He confirmed that a suitable site has already been identified in Thane district, under the jurisdiction of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).
Minister Naik, along with the Forest Secretary, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, and other senior officials, recently visited Vantara and were impressed by the world-class facilities and compassionate care provided to animals. “Vantara is equipped with modern amenities that ensure the holistic wellbeing of rescued wildlife. Inspired by that model, we aim to create a similar facility in Maharashtra,” said Naik.
He emphasized that the goal is not to cage animals, but to offer them an environment where they can be nurtured and treated, especially as the state continues to witness an increase in encounters between humans and wildlife due to habitat loss.

Speaking to the Sprouts News Naik informed that a formal request has been extended to Anant Ambani, urging him to take charge of the Suryatara project, given his expertise and success with Vantara. If Ambani accepts, this will mark a significant collaboration between Maharashtra’s government and the Reliance Group in the field of wildlife conservation.
