Vasai fake godman case explained: Rishikesh Vaidya booked for alleged rape, blackmail under ‘spiritual’ pretext

The Vasai fake godman case has surfaced amid ongoing scrutiny of similar allegations in Maharashtra, with Rishikesh Vaidya accused of exploiting a woman under the guise of spiritual guidance.
According to police, a case has been registered against Vaidya at Manikpur police station in Vasai following a complaint by a 35-year-old woman from Pune alleging rape and blackmail.
Authorities said the matter has been transferred to Manjari police station in Pune, as the alleged first incident occurred there, necessitating jurisdictional investigation and further legal proceedings.
Allegations linked to ‘spiritual’ manipulation and coercion
Police said the complainant came into contact with Rishikesh Vaidya in 2023 through Facebook, where he introduced himself as a spiritual leader associated with the organisation ‘Aamchi Vasai’.
Investigators said Vaidya allegedly gained the woman’s trust by exploiting her religious beliefs, gradually establishing a personal connection under the pretext of offering spiritual teachings and guidance.
In December 2023, the accused reportedly met the woman in Pune, where he allegedly claimed to be an incarnation of Lord Shiva and told her she was “Parvati”.
According to the complaint, he allegedly took her to a lodge in the Manjari area, administered an intoxicating substance, and sexually assaulted her while also capturing objectionable photographs without consent.
Police sources said these images were later allegedly used to threaten and coerce the woman into maintaining contact, raising concerns about sustained exploitation beyond the initial incident.

Blackmail claims and subsequent developments in Vasai
The complainant has alleged that Vaidya used the explicit images to blackmail her and pressured her into meeting him again on multiple occasions over an extended period.
In May 2025, she was allegedly called to Hotel Express Inn in Vasai, where the accused reportedly attempted further sexual misconduct, according to details shared in the police complaint.
The woman approached authorities after recent media coverage of the Ashok Kharat case in Nashik, which is currently under Special Investigation Team scrutiny, encouraged her to disclose her experience.
She subsequently informed her husband and filed a formal complaint at Manikpur police station on Wednesday evening, prompting immediate registration of a criminal case against the accused.
Police response and wider allegations under investigation
Senior Police Inspector Hiralal Jadhav of Manikpur police station confirmed that a detailed investigation is underway and all allegations are being examined in accordance with legal procedures.
The complainant has further alleged that Vaidya may have similarly targeted multiple women by posing as a spiritual figure, though police said these claims are yet to be independently verified.
Officials added that the case transfer to Pune police is procedural, as the primary alleged offence occurred within their jurisdiction, and coordinated investigation efforts are ongoing between both police units.
The organisation ‘Aamchi Vasai’, with which Vaidya is reportedly associated, has not publicly responded to the allegations at the time of publication.
Broader concerns over fake godmen cases in Maharashtra
The case has drawn attention to recurring concerns around self-styled spiritual leaders allegedly exploiting followers, particularly women, under the guise of religious or spiritual influence in Maharashtra.
Legal experts note that such cases often involve elements of psychological manipulation, coercion, and misuse of faith, making timely reporting and evidence collection critical for prosecution.
Authorities have urged individuals to exercise caution when engaging with unverified spiritual figures and to report suspicious or exploitative behaviour to law enforcement agencies without delay.
As the investigation progresses, police are expected to gather forensic and digital evidence, including communication records, to establish the sequence of events and determine the full scope of allegations.
