Death Trap

Brahma Kumaris Global Hospital and Research Centre (BSES Hospital) located at Andheri West has had no permission to run a nursing home since 2012. Yet the hospital has been performing surgeries unauthorisedly. Resultantly many patients have lost their lives in the last few years. Despite this the hospital has continued to carry out surgeries illegally, Sprouts Special Investigating Team has obtained this reliable information.

This hospital located opposite Andheri railway station is equipped with 113 beds. Although it has no permission from the BMC’s health department, it has been carrying out the surgeries day in and day out for the last many years. This information has been revealed by the Maharashtra Government’s Women and Child Rights and Welfare Committee in its 13th report published in June 2019. This report was submitted to the State Government by the committee chairperson BJP MLA Dr. Bharati Lavhekar.

The 15 committee members, including Lavhekar, had inspected the hospital and based on proof and observations prepared its 304 page report. Although three years have passed by, no action has been taken against the hospital which is being run in violation of regulations, the Sprouts Investigation Team has learnt.

Mandar Velankar residing at Kandivali was admitted to this hospital on 25 October 2017. A surgery for cervical spondylosis was carried out on him by a neurosurgeon Dr Shashank Sureshrao Joshi. However the patient died soon after the surgery.

Mandar’s wife Meenakshi has held Dr Shashank Joshi and his junior Dr Shraddha Maheshwari responsible for their lethargy, which led to the death of her husband. In a complaint to the Mumbai Police Commissioner, Municipal Commissioner and Maharashtra Medical Council, Meenakshi Velankar has demanded stern action, including cancellation of their medical registration. She has also filed a complaint in the consumer court and metropolitan magistrate’s court demanding compensation for the death of her husband due to medical negligence.

Meenakshi Velankar has also demanded that the hospital be closed down and criminal charges be levied against hospital’s Medical Director Dr Ashok Mehta and the doctors visiting the hospital for treating the patients.
