The case, filed by Satyaki Savarkar, alleges defamation over remarks made by Gandhi in 2023. Rahul Gandhi in Legal Trouble as Savarkar Defamation Case Reaches Key Stage
The Savarkar defamation case against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has entered a crucial stage. The Pune MP-MLA court has fixed November 13 for hearing arguments from both sides. After the arguments, the court is likely to give its order on whether to cancel Gandhi’s exemption from personal appearance.
The case, filed by Satyaki Savarkar, a descendant of freedom fighter Veer Savarkar, accuses Rahul Gandhi of making defamatory remarks about Savarkar during a political speech in 2023.

Complainant’s Lawyer Alleges Delay Tactics
Satyaki Savarkar’s lawyer, Advocate Sangram Kolhatkar, filed an application on November 7 seeking cancellation of Gandhi’s exemption. He argued that Rahul Gandhi is misusing the exemption granted earlier and not following the court’s conditions.
Kolhatkar also alleged that Gandhi’s defence team is repeatedly seeking adjournments and creating unnecessary delays. He said the defence has been filing and withdrawing documents without clear reasons, which is stopping the case from moving forward.
Court Takes Serious Note of Delays
The Pune MP-MLA court has noted the repeated postponements and decided to list the matter urgently for November 13. Both sides will now argue on whether Rahul Gandhi should continue to be exempted from appearing in person or be directed to attend every hearing.
Legal observers say the case is now at a turning point and could directly affect Rahul Gandhi’s political schedule, especially during the ongoing Bihar elections.
Optional Inclusion (Use If Appropriate)
The complainant, Satyaki Savarkar, has already stepped into the witness box and started his testimony. However, due to repeated interruptions from the defence side, he is being deprived of his right to timely justice — as the saying goes, “justice delayed is justice denied.”
Background of the Case
Rahul Gandhi’s comments on Veer Savarkar in 2023 sparked controversy across Maharashtra. The Savarkar family, represented by Satyaki Savarkar, filed a criminal defamation case under the Indian Penal Code. The case has been ongoing in the Pune MP-MLA court since then.
Legal experts say this case reflects the tension between freedom of political speech and the limits set by defamation laws. The upcoming November 13 hearing will decide whether Gandhi’s exemption stays or gets revoked — a decision with both legal and political consequences.
