Amazon Retail India Bhiwandi Warehouse Case: FDA Files FIR Over Alleged Sale of Expired Food, Probe Underway
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has registered a criminal case after alleging that expired and unsafe food products from Amazon Retail India Pvt. Ltd.’s Bhiwandi distribution centre were diverted for sale instead of being destroyed. The investigation is continuing, and no arrests have been made.
The Amazon Retail India Bhiwandi warehouse case has come under scrutiny after Maharashtra’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) alleged that expired and deteriorated food products were diverted into the retail supply chain instead of being scientifically destroyed. Based on an FDA complaint, the Kongaon Police have registered an FIR against two persons, while the investigation remains ongoing.
The action follows a series of enforcement drives launched by FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe against food adulteration, regulatory violations, and unsafe consumer products across Maharashtra. According to officials, the latest case raises concerns regarding food safety compliance and disposal procedures at a major distribution facility in Bhiwandi.
FDA Inspection at Amazon Retail India Distribution Centre
According to the complaint filed by Food Safety Officer Arvind Vasant Kandelkar, the FDA inspected Amazon Retail India Private Limited’s distribution centre at Saravali village, Bhiwandi taluka, on June 24, 2026.
The inspection allegedly revealed that expired and damaged food products, which were required to be destroyed under prescribed procedures, were instead diverted for sale in the market. The complaint alleges that such actions could mislead consumers while posing potential risks to public health.
The FIR has been registered at Kongaon Police Station under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Sections 318(4), 274 and 3(5), along with Sections 26(1), 26(2)(i), 27(1), 27(3)(e), and 31(1) of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
Officials Name Two Persons in Complaint
According to the FDA complaint, Rahman K., proprietor of R.K. Traders, allegedly failed to comply with contractual obligations relating to the disposal of expired food products. The complaint further alleges that a false destruction certificate was submitted despite the products allegedly not being disposed of as required.
The complaint also names Somashekhar Basavaraj Konnur, identified as the West Region Facility Manager of Amazon Retail India, along with other personnel allegedly associated with the disposal process. Authorities have stated that the precise role of each individual will be determined during the investigation.
Officials have clarified that the allegations remain under investigation and that no conclusions regarding criminal liability have yet been reached.
Investigation Continues; No Arrests So Far
Police confirmed that no arrests have been made in the case so far. The investigation is being conducted by Police Inspector Santosh Borade of Kongaon Police Station.
When contacted, Senior Police Inspector Netaram Mhaskhe confirmed that an FIR has been registered and stated that further investigation is in progress based on the complaint submitted by the Food and Drug Administration.
Authorities are expected to examine documentary records, disposal procedures, contractual compliance, and the movement of the food products to determine whether any statutory violations occurred.

Part of Wider FDA Enforcement Drive in Maharashtra
The latest action comes shortly after another FDA operation in Mankoli-Dapode, Bhiwandi, where officials conducted a raid on an alleged unlicensed cosmetics manufacturing unit.
Since assuming office as FDA Commissioner, Tukaram Mundhe has intensified enforcement against food adulteration, illegal manufacturing, gutkha and pan masala violations, and regulatory breaches involving medicines and food businesses. Multiple inspection teams have been conducting raids across Maharashtra as part of the department’s broader compliance campaign.
According to officials, the Bhiwandi warehouse case highlights the importance of ensuring that expired food products are disposed of strictly in accordance with the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, rather than re-entering the consumer supply chain.
The investigation remains ongoing, and the findings of the police inquiry are expected to determine whether additional individuals or entities may be held accountable under applicable laws. Sprouts News will continue to monitor official developments in the case and report verified updates as they become available.
