Sagar Mehta, one of the main accused in the alleged Rs 177 crore Torres Jewelers money laundering case, was arrested by local authorities in Dubai after months on the run, the Enforcement Directorate has informed a special PMLA court in Mumbai.
The arrest of Sagar Mehta comes as a significant development in the ongoing investigation into the alleged Rs 177 crore money laundering case linked to the Torres Jewelers investment scheme. The Enforcement Directorate told a special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court in Mumbai on Thursday that local police in Dubai had arrested Mehta.
The court had earlier been told that Sagar Mehta had fled India and evaded investigators for several months. He has been accused by the Enforcement Directorate of assisting in the collection and management of proceeds of crime in connection with the alleged financial fraud.
During the court proceedings, the defense counsel prayed for withdrawal of the proclamation issued against Sagar Mehta. This follows the court earlier issuing non-bailable warrants against several accused named in the investigation.
Enforcement Directorate Details Alleged Torres Jewellers Financial Network
Earlier, the special PMLA court had issued non-bailable warrants against Sagar Mehta, Olena Stoian, Oleksandr Zapichenko and Viktoria Kovalenko. Investigators said Sagar Mehta had allegedly left India on December 28, 2024, while the inquiry into the alleged financial irregularities was ongoing.
Olena Stoian was a Ukrainian national of Moldova, the Enforcement Directorate said, citing court documents. She is named with Ukrainian nationals Oleksandr Zapichenko and Viktoria Kovalenko as among those allegedly linked to the wider financial structure under investigation.
The agency said that Oleksandr Zapichenko and Olena Stoian were allegedly involved in developing financial structuring mechanisms and money laundering operations. Investigators said they funded it initially through illegal means, making it easier to launder illegal cash into apparently legitimate investments.
The Enforcement Directorate has always said that the accused persons were playing different roles in the alleged network. The agency’s court filings are part of an ongoing investigation, and the allegations are still subject to judicial scrutiny.

The case continues to attract interest due to its alleged scale, cross-border elements and the involvement of several foreign nationals. Some more court hearings and investigative steps are expected to follow as the enforcement agencies collect more evidence and try to bring the accused to justice.
As the Enforcement Directorate continues its investigation, the legal battle is all set to revolve around the alleged financial architecture, flow of funds, and the specific roles assigned to Sagar Mehta, Olena Stoian, Oleksandr Zapichenko, and Viktoria Kovalenko. Future developments may shed light on the next stage of the case and any possible prosecution strategy.
