  • What is its readership?

It has a strong base of nearly 5 lakh readers per month. Right know “Sproutsnews” is being published in English and the plans are afoot to start it in several Indian languages including Hindi and Marathi. The “Sproutsnews” takes up the issues of public interest fearlessly with no holds barred.

  • What is its revenue model?

The “Sproutsnews” is registered as a non-profit organisation and raises funds from readers’ contributions, grants from foundations and a little revenue from advertisements. The smaller sources of revenue include events and content syndication.

  • How does it keeps away from the influence of advertisers?

Revenue via advertising is less than 30% per month. This makes it distinct from other publications, most of whom earn their revenue solely from advertisements. This gives the “Sproutsnews” a freedom to choose the advertisers and avoid the influence of advertisers on the content. Besides, a sizable income comes via programmatic ads on the website, mobile site and the Youtube channel. There is no direct interaction between “Sproutsnews” and advertisers.

  • How one can donate to “Sproutsnews”?

  • The mode of subscription

The “Sproutsnews” relies on small sums of money from large numbers of people.
It reaches out proactively to each and every user via a call or a meeting to see if they would be willing to support and donate Rs 200 and more depending on their capacity. The donations up to even Rs one lakh are expected. A steady flow of donations every month can ensure fixed monthly source of income. Needless to say that such contribution becomes extremely helpful in running the news publication.

  • How does a recurring support plan help?

News gathering and publishing is a human-intensive exercise. Any report published requires nearly 4-5 individuals to work on it actively. We are required to create a stable source of income to keep “Sproutsnews” not only running but make it agile and vibrant. A continued support by our readers is the best way to achieve this.

  • Will a small donation help the “Sproutsnews”?

By all means. Every small bit counts. When you commit to support us with Rs 200 and more every month, you will make our democracy stronger. This will give us confidence to continue doing our work.

  • Why is this regarded as a donation/contribution and not a subscription where one can get something in return for the amount contributed?

The contributors will get earth-shaking news, spicy news and entertainment news, a plenty for their small contributions. We would have given something in kind in return in exchange for support. But the income tax rules prevent us from doing so. If anything is offered in exchange, then the amount collected would be considered as commercial revenue and not a donation. Since “Sproutsnews” is a non-profit organisation, its commercial income should not exceed 20% of its total income.

  • What are some of the big donations that “Sproutsnews” has received?

As of now “Sproutsnews” has been collecting small donations from individual readers and supporters. In the coming months we want to be a news organisation, supported completely by its readers and viewers.

Only Indian citizens and Indian entities can make donations to a media non-profit outfit like “Sproutsnews”. If you are a non-resident Indian (NRI), you can make a donation, in any currency. But Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs) and Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) may not.
