Pune FDA Crackdown: Tukaram Mundhe Suspends Food Licences of Seven Hotels and Restaurants Over Food Safety Violations
The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has suspended the food safety licences of seven hotels and restaurants in Pune following inspections that reportedly found hygiene lapses, expired food stock and violations of food safety regulations under its Safe Food, Safe Maharashtra campaign.
Pune FDA crackdown targets food safety violations
The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has intensified its enforcement drive in Pune by suspending the food safety licences of seven hotels and restaurants for alleged violations of food safety regulations. The action follows a statewide campaign launched under FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe after he assumed office earlier this year.
According to the FDA, inspections conducted between July 1 and July 3 covered 70 hotels and restaurants across the Pune division under the Safe Food, Safe Maharashtra initiative. Officials reported instances of unhygienic conditions, alleged violations of the Food Safety and Standards Act, and, in some establishments, the presence of expired food stock.
The enforcement action has drawn attention because it includes several well-known food establishments in Pune. The FDA stated that the suspensions are intended to ensure compliance with food safety standards and protect public health through stricter regulatory oversight.

Seven Pune establishments face FDA licence suspension
According to the administration, the establishments whose food safety licences have been suspended are Hotel Grand Purandar, Sinhagad Road; Crown Bakers, Sinhagad Road; M/s Agrotis Catering Pvt. Ltd., Ambegaon, Pune district; Barkat Biryani House, Wagholi; Royal Biryani House, Wagholi; and National 360, Bavdhan, Pune. The official announcement referred to seven suspended licences.
The FDA has not publicly disclosed whether all the establishments have completed corrective measures or whether they intend to challenge the suspension orders. Any further regulatory action is expected to depend upon compliance inspections and applicable legal procedures.
Reports circulating locally also claimed that some hotels discarded food items, including paneer, following the intensified inspection campaign. However, the FDA’s official communication primarily focused on regulatory compliance and did not independently confirm those reports.
Tukaram Mundhe expands statewide food safety enforcement
Since being appointed FDA Commissioner on May 25, 2026, Tukaram Mundhe has initiated an aggressive enforcement campaign against prohibited gutkha, pan masala, allegedly substandard food products and establishments violating food safety regulations across Maharashtra.
The commissioner has repeatedly emphasised that consumer safety remains the department’s priority and that enforcement will continue against businesses found violating statutory food safety requirements. The Pune inspections form part of this broader statewide compliance initiative.
The FDA has also appealed to hotel and restaurant operators to maintain hygienic kitchens, comply fully with food safety standards and ensure the availability of free safe drinking water for customers, as required under applicable regulations.
FDA urges citizens to report food safety complaints
The Food and Drug Administration has encouraged citizens to actively participate in food safety monitoring by reporting concerns regarding food quality, hygiene or suspected violations through its toll-free helpline 1800-222-3635.
Officials have indicated that surprise inspections will continue across Maharashtra, with enforcement action likely against establishments found violating food safety norms. The campaign reflects the regulator’s broader effort to strengthen compliance, improve public confidence and reinforce food safety standards throughout the hospitality sector.
The latest enforcement drive also follows a series of regulatory initiatives undertaken since Tukaram Mundhe assumed charge of the department, including action against prohibited products and stricter monitoring of food businesses. As inspections continue, the FDA has signalled that similar measures may be taken wherever violations are detected in accordance with the law. Sprouts News will continue monitoring further regulatory developments and official responses.
