In a significant development, the 58.5-acre salt pan land near Kelkar College in Mulund has been officially allotted for the rehabilitation of residents displaced by the Dharavi Redevelopment Project. According to documents obtained by ‘Sprouts’ under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, Dharavi Redevelopment Project Private Limited (DRPPL) made a payment of ₹319 crore to the central government for this land on October 10, 2024. Additionally, land parcels in Kurla, Malvani, and Deonar have also been approved for the project, as per ‘Sprouts exclusive findings.
Broken Promises by Political Leaders
Previously, political leaders had assured the public that not an inch of the Mulund salt pan land would be used for the Dharavi redevelopment. However, these promises have now been rendered hollow. Alongside the Mulund land, plots in Kurla, Malvani, and the Deonar dumping ground have also been approved for the project. Despite public opposition in these areas, the government remains firm on proceeding with the Dharavi Redevelopment Project.
Rehabilitation Details
The Dharavi Redevelopment Project, implemented through the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA), aims to provide free housing to eligible slum dwellers in Dharavi. Around 3.5 lakh ineligible residents are set to receive rental housing. For this purpose, 46 acres of land at the Mulund dumping ground had already been earmarked. The dumping ground will be closed this year after processing the accumulated waste, and the land will then be transferred for redevelopment.
In addition, 10 acres of the 18-acre Mulund check post land have been allocated for the project, with the remaining area under consideration for transfer. ‘Sprouts’ accessed documents revealing this information, brought to light by lawyer Sagar Devre.
₹319 Crore Payment for Mulund Salt Pan Land
The Kelkar College-adjacent 58.5-acre salt pan land in Mulund has officially been transferred to the Dharavi Redevelopment Project. On October 10, 2024, DRPPL deposited ₹319 crore with the central government as payment for this land. This transaction, revealed through RTI, has sparked fresh debates about the promises made by political leaders.
Contradictory Statements from Leaders
During the Lok Sabha elections, BJP Mumbai President and MLA Ashish Shelar assured ‘Sprouts’ in an interview that Dharavi residents would be rehabilitated in Dharavi itself and would not be shifted to Mulund. Similarly, MLA Mihir Kotecha had stated to ‘Sprouts’ that Dharavi residents should not be relocated to Mulund, emphasizing, “Don’t bring that burden here.”
Even MP Sanjay Dina Patil, who used Dharavi rehabilitation as an election issue, strongly opposed the use of Mulund land for this purpose. However, these assurances now stand contradicted.
