Sprouts News reveals that a petition has been filed seeking an immediate halt to alleged illegal construction activities by an Adani Group company. The petition claims that the company is carrying out construction without obtaining the necessary environmental clearances. This legal action adds to the ongoing environmental controversies surrounding the conglomerate.

In 2013, a committee established by the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) found that the Adani project in Mundra, Gujarat, had violated environmental norms. The report cited destruction of mangroves, obstruction of creeks, and failure to comply with clearance conditions. As a result, the committee recommended setting up an Environment Restoration Fund of Rs 200 crore or 1% of the total investment, whichever was higher, to mitigate the damage.

Similarly, in 2016, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) imposed a Rs 25 crore fine on Adani-Hazira Port Pvt Ltd for commencing work without obtaining environmental clearance. The NGT also revoked the company’s previous clearance, citing significant ecological harm, including the destruction of mangroves and disruption of local fishing communities.

Growing Concerns Over Compliance with Environmental Regulations

The repeated legal and environmental violations raise concerns about the environmental compliance of major infrastructure projects. Environmentalists and legal experts stress the importance of following regulations to prevent ecological damage and ensure sustainable development. The latest petition against the Adani Group highlights the need for stricter monitoring and enforcement of environmental laws.
