An investigation by the Sprouts News Investigation Team, led by RTI activist Pritam Nachankar, has uncovered a significant lapse in the Maharashtra Legislature’s operations. Despite spending crores of rupees on legislative sessions, the implementation of decisions has been severely hampered due to the non-formation of essential committees.

The Maharashtra Legislative Assembly relies on various committees, such as the Public Accounts Committee, Estimates Committee, and Panchayati Raj Committee, to oversee government expenditures, identify irregularities, and curb corruption. However, these crucial committees have not been constituted for the past several months, leading to a standstill in their oversight functions.

The primary reason for this stagnation is the ongoing internal disputes between the ruling and opposition parties. The ruling party’s negligence in appointing committee members, coupled with the opposition’s indifference, has resulted in a deadlock, adversely affecting the resolution of public issues and the monitoring of government activities.

These legislative committees hold constitutional significance and function as mini-legislatures. Their absence has halted the scrutiny of government schemes, detection of irregularities, and control over corruption, directly impacting the public.

It is imperative for both the ruling and opposition parties to address this issue promptly by constituting these committees. Restoring their functionality is essential to ensure effective governance, accountability, and the timely resolution of public grievances.
