Competing in the women's 48kg category, Mirabai Chanu dominated the field with a Commonwealth Games record total lift of 190 kilograms, reinforcing her status among India's most successful athletes. The 31-year-old lifted 85kg in the snatch, before clearing 105kg in the clean and jerk. Both lifts established new Commonwealth Games records and secured her third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal after previous triumphs in 2018 and 2022. Mirabai Chanu extends Commonwealth Games dominance with third straight gold

Mirabai Chanu added another big win to her glittering career in international weightlifting. She had collected Olympic, World Championship and Commonwealth Games medals and was once again consistent on one of the biggest stages in the sport.

The competition took place at the SEC Armadillo in Glasgow, Scotland, where Chanu maintained complete control throughout the women's 48kg final. Her combined total of 190 kilograms proved comfortably ahead of the competition, underlining India's strength in weightlifting at the Games.

President Droupadi Murmu said, “Mirabai Chanu has shown exceptional grit, determination and excellence in representing the country on the international platform.

Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan commended her dedication, resilience, and sustained excellence over several years. Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the victory as another glorious chapter in Indian weightlifting, calling Mirabai Chanu an inspiration for aspiring athletes and wishing her continued success.

India adds two weightlifting silver medals in Glasgow

India’s campaign continued successfully with two silver medals in weightlifting. Chanambam Rishikanta Singh finished second in the men's 60kg event after recording a combined lift of 264 kilograms.

Rishikanta equalled the Commonwealth Games snatch record by lifting 121 kilograms before adding 143 kilograms in the clean and jerk. His consistent performance earned India another podium finish in the competition. 

Raja Muthupandi won silver in men's 65kg with a total lift of 286kg. His lifts were 126 kg in the snatch and 160 kg in the clean and jerk.

Malaysia's Muhamad Aznil Bin Bidin claimed the gold medal in the men's 65kg competition after registering a Commonwealth Games record total of 299 kilograms, finishing ahead of Raja Muthupandi.

Boxing campaign also gathers momentum for India

It was a good day also for India in boxing as a few athletes advanced to the knockout stages. Jadumani Singh reached the men's 55kg quarter-finals with an impressive win over Sumama Rehman of Pakistan.

Preeti Pawar defeated Malawi’s Deborah Mtenje to book her place in the women’s 54kg quarter-finals and gave India another medal hope outside of weightlifting. 

India now has four medals – one gold, two silver and one bronze. Para-powerlifter Jhandu Kumar had earlier opened India’s account with a bronze in the men’s heavyweight event.

India’s campaign at the Commonwealth Games 2026 has got off to a good start with several athletes making it through to the next round across the disciplines and weightlifting continuing to add medals.
