• Border Security vs. Green Energy: The Khavda Controversy Unfolds

Sprouts News Exclusive

An exclusive investigation by the Sprouts News Special Investigation Team has uncovered critical national security concerns surrounding the Khavda Renewable Energy Park in Gujarat. Recent developments have ignited a debate over national security protocols and corporate interests. The Indian government has reportedly relaxed security measures along the sensitive India-Pakistan border to facilitate this ambitious project, awarded to the Adani Group.

The Khavda plant, poised to become the world’s largest renewable energy project, is situated near the contentious India-Pakistan border. Traditionally, stringent security protocols have restricted major constructions within a 10-kilometer radius of the border. However, in May 2023, the Defence Ministry revised these guidelines, permitting the installation of solar panels and wind turbines as close as 1 kilometer from the border. This policy shift has raised eyebrows among defense experts and political observers.

Critics argue that such proximity to the border could compromise national security. A former military chief expressed concerns, stating, “It strikes me as particularly imprudent to make any major infrastructure investment so close to the international border.” Defense analyst Ajai Shukla added that altering border defense regulations for commercial gain could lead to accusations of favoritism towards benefiting corporate entities.

The Adani Group has refuted these allegations, asserting full compliance with all governmental regulations. A spokesperson emphasized that the land allocation adheres to policy guidelines and is based on the company’s credentials as India’s largest renewable energy firm.

The political ramifications are significant. Opposition parties have seized upon these developments to criticize the Modi administration. Congress MP Manickam Tagore recently moved a motion in the Lok Sabha to discuss the relaxation of national security protocols for the Khavda project. He accused the government of compromising military advice and national security protocols in favor of corporate interests.

Sprouts News has learned from sources that internal discussions within the government are ongoing regarding further security evaluations of the Khavda project. A senior official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that authorities are reassessing the potential risks associated with energy infrastructure near sensitive border zones.
