At least seven devotees were killed and more than a dozen injured after an electricity pole fell during a rush at Ashok Dham temple in Lakhisarai, Bihar. Police said possible electrocution may have contributed to the panic and subsequent stampede-like situation, although the exact cause and sequence remain under investigation. The incident occurred during Shravan, when temples traditionally experience heavy crowds. Rescue teams shifted injured devotees to hospitals, while Bihar authorities ordered immediate medical assistance and expressed condolences to the families of those who died.
Ashok Dham Temple Stampede Leaves 7 Dead After Electricity Pole Falls in Bihar
An electricity pole allegedly fell during a rush at Ashok Dham temple, killing at least seven devotees and leaving more than a dozen injured.
At least seven people were killed and over a dozen devotees injured in the incident at the Ashok Dham temple at Lakhisarai in Bihar, officials said on Monday. The incident took place during Shravan, a holy month marked by large religious gatherings, when devotees had gathered to offer water to Hindu deity Shiva.
The falling electric pole could have caused electrocution of people in the crowded temple area, leading to a stampede-like situation, they said. In the first video, an electric pole fell, and people were electrocuted before the crowd situation worsened, senior police officer Shivam Kumar told news agency ANI.
Kumar warned that the cause of the accident was not yet known and the circumstances would be known to the authorities only after checking all the information available. The exact sequence of events is still being investigated, with officials trying to establish how the electricity pole fell, whether there was electrocution, and how the crowd reacted.
Ashok Dham Temple Incident Prompts Emergency Response
Rescue operations were underway, and relatives had gathered at medical facilities, said Shailendra Kumar, a civil official, adding that more than a dozen injured devotees had been taken to hospitals for treatment.
Videos shared by ANI showed relatives at hospitals as rescuers brought in injured people. The videos showed the immediate emergency response following the incident at Ashok Dham.
“The deaths are tragic, and I am deeply pained over the reported accident at Ashok Dham in Lakhisarai,” said Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary.
"Condolences were expressed to the bereaved families and directions were given to the administration to provide necessary treatment and immediate medical care to injured devotees," Choudhary said.
The incident occurred in a rush of devotees, Al Jazeera Staff and Reuters reported. The Press Trust of India gave more details.
The incident took place in the month of Shravan, when temples across the country witness heavy footfall with devotees performing rituals, making religious offerings and undertaking pilgrimage activities.
Crowd management poses a challenge for large gatherings, especially where electrical infrastructure, narrow access routes, weather conditions, or sudden movements hinder the movement of worshipers.

Religious Crowds Raise Safety Questions
The incident at the Ashok Dham temple thus raises questions on crowd management, electrical safety, preparedness for emergencies, and coordination between the temple authorities and the local administration during peak times of religious fervor.
India has a grim record of crowd accidents at large religious festivals; 30 people reportedly died in a crush at the Maha Kumbh festival in 2025. Tens of millions of visitors flocked to the Maha Kumbh to bathe in the holy waters. It is a testimony to how huge religious gatherings can be across the country.
But the past tragedy is relevant in crowd management talks because officials have to consider the rapidly changing crowd density, emergency access, communication systems, and evacuation plans.
Investigators in Lakhisarai are expected to piece together the precise chain of events that led to the deaths and injuries, including whether the electrical incident directly caused the crowd to respond.
Further official findings will be key to ascertaining the causes, identifying any safety lapses, and assessing whether further measures are needed at Ashok Dham during future religious gatherings. Authorities are investigating the incident and will share more details on the health of the injured devotees and the circumstances around it, according to Sprouts News.
So far, seven deaths and more than a dozen injuries have been confirmed by officials, but the exact cause is yet to be verified and investigated by authorities.
