Shehzad Poonawalla has resigned from the BJP and stepped down from his position as national spokesperson and primary party membership, citing urgent financial and personal circumstances. In his communication to BJP president Nitin Nabin, Poonawalla said he had initially submitted his resignation on July 30, but the leadership asked him to reconsider. After further reflection, he decided to proceed with his departure. His decision follows speculation triggered by changes to his social media profile and comes as he considers moving to the private sector.
Shehzad Poonawalla Resigns From BJP, Cites Personal and Financial Reasons
Shehzad Poonawalla resigned from the Bharatiya Janata Party, or BJP, on Monday, after submitting a fresh request for acceptance of his departure from the organization. Poonawalla said he had written to BJP national president Nitin Nabin seeking relief from the post of national spokesperson and active primary membership.
Poonawalla offered his unconditional resignation from all positions in the BJP and from his primary membership on July 30, citing urgent financial and personal reasons, his letter said. The BJP leadership did not want to accept my resignation initially and asked me to reconsider the decision before going ahead with my departure, he said.
Poonawalla said he was touched by the response of the party, but after much thought, he has decided to stick to his earlier decision. He also said that certain incidents involving some individuals, which he said were discussed in detail with Nabin earlier, further convinced him to quit the outfit.
BJP Leadership And Poonawalla's Decision
In his resignation letter posted on X, Poonawalla explained his decision and communication with Nabin on his political and organizational position.
The development comes amid speculation after Poonawalla changed his X bio on July 31, removing all references to the BJP from his public bio.
The move at the time led to speculation that Poonawalla would exit the party, but the BJP did not immediately confirm his political status.
In his latest communication, Poonawalla said he planned to move to the private sector because of “urgent emergency financial and personal circumstances” around his current situation.
He also hinted that quitting the party organization was not necessarily a rejection of his broader political principles or backing of its leadership.

Poonawalla Signals Continued Support For Modi
Poonawalla said he will continue to support Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP’s vision and work wherever possible and in whatever form possible.
He framed his decision as a break with the organizational system and not a distancing of the individual leadership or ideological principles he associated with the party.
Poonawalla’s exit from formal BJP duties should not be interpreted as a definitive political severance from Modi or the party’s broader agenda, the statement said.
But his resignation from the primary membership and the post of national spokesperson is a significant change in his formal relationship with the BJP.
Poonawalla has been closely associated with the BJP's political communication, often articulating the party’s position in television debates and public political discourse.
His decision therefore comes at a time when changes involving leading party spokespeople can attract wider attention because of their role in communicating organizational positions.
What Happens After Shehzad Poonawalla's Resignation
What happens next will probably depend on whether Nitin Nabin, national president of the BJP, accepts Poonawalla’s resignation from his organizational duties and primary membership.
The party’s formal response to Poonawalla’s resignation is yet to come, and hence the exact status of the resignation is subject to it.
The episode also points out that personal circumstances can affect political participation, especially when individuals in key organizational positions decide to move into private-sector employment.
Poonawalla has publicly maintained so far that his exit is about the BJP’s organizational structure, while still expressing support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the party’s political vision.
We will continue to follow up on any formal response from the BJP, Nitin Nabin & Shehzad Poonawalla on the resignation and its implications.
