Spider-Man: Brand New Day Sets New India Box Office Record, Surpasses Avengers: Endgame Opening
Sony Pictures' Spider-Man: Brand New Day has rewritten India's box office history by delivering the biggest opening for a non-Indian film, overtaking Avengers: Endgame and drawing nearly one million moviegoers on its first day.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day has opened to record-breaking numbers at the India box office, becoming the biggest non-Indian film opening in the country’s theatrical history. The Sony Pictures superhero blockbuster has crossed the long-standing benchmark set by Avengers: Endgame, a big milestone for Hollywood cinema in India.
The reported figures show the film made INR72.44 crore ($7.6 million) on its opening day alone, with nearly one million moviegoers across Indian cinemas on Thursday. The strong opening highlights the continued popularity of the Spider-Man franchise with audiences across the country and indicates strong demand for large-scale international theatrical releases.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day India Box Office Delivers Historic Opening
That momentum carried over into the extended opening weekend. Spider-Man: Brand New Day has grossed over INR135 crore ($14.1 million) in box office collections in the first four days of its release at India’s largest multiplex chain PVR Inox, drawing nearly three million moviegoers with an average occupancy of 60%.
The film collected an estimated INR 328.5 crore ($34.4 million) at the box office in its extended four-day opening weekend on 17,250 screens across the country. The superhero film became the fourth highest-grossing Hollywood release of all time at the Indian box office in just four days, coming close to lifetime records held by Avatar: The Way of Water and Avengers: Endgame.
The latest performance reinforces India’s position as one of the world’s fastest-growing international markets for major Hollywood franchises. The film’s opening has largely increased expectations for its long-term theatrical run.
PVR Inox CEO Gautam Dutta Highlights Nationwide Audience Response
The audience response has been very encouraging, said Gautam Dutta, Chief Executive Officer, Revenue and Operations, PVR Inox Limited. He said the success of the film demonstrated the staying power of global event cinema and said the demand was still strong in metro centres as well as Tier II and Tier III cities.
Good walk-in crowds, repeat audiences and advance bookings helped the film sustain the momentum through the opening weekend, said Dutta. He also cited the broad geographic spread of ticket sales as evidence that the movie was popular nationwide, not just in major urban markets.

Regional Language Versions Strengthen Nationwide Performance
The film’s record collections were also fuelled by its availability in several languages. The original English language version recorded about 55% occupancy across nearly 8,000 shows, whereas the Hindi dubbed version registered an exceptional 95% occupancy across around 7,000 shows.
The film was also dubbed and released in Telugu and Tamil, expanding its audience across southern India and attracting viewers beyond the traditional English-language film audience. The multilingual release strategy showed the growing importance of regional language versions for international studio releases in India.
Bengaluru contributed 23% of the tracked top-city grosses among metro markets, followed by Hyderabad with 17%, Mumbai with 15% and Delhi with 14%. High attendance from families, repeat viewers, and premium large-format audiences also contributed to boosted overall collections.
Avatar: The Way of Water and Avengers: Endgame Records Now Under Pressure
Spider-Man: Brand New Day already has a historic opening to its name but its next challenge is to surpass the collection records in the lifetime collections of Avatar: The Way of Water (INR484.36 crore/$50.8 million) and Avengers: Endgame (INR442.3 crore/$46.4 million) in India.
Industry watchers will be keeping an eye on the film’s weekday performance and sustained audience interest in the weeks to come. Spider-Man: Brand New Day is well-placed to continue its successful theatrical run with strong occupancy levels, positive word-of-mouth and widespread regional support.
