Mumbai Chhath Puja 2026: BMC Plans Single-Window Permissions, Artificial Ponds and Civic Facilities
BMC Commissioner Ashwini Bhide has assured Chhath Puja organisers of sanitation, drinking water, toilets, lighting and simplified permissions following consultations with more than 20 committees.
Mumbai Chhath Puja 2026 preparations gained momentum on Thursday as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) discussed arrangements for devotees gathering across the city’s beaches and waterfronts.
Municipal Commissioner Ashwini Bhide chaired a meeting at the civic headquarters, where representatives from more than 20 Chhath Puja committees presented suggestions and infrastructure requirements.
The discussions focused on ensuring safe, orderly celebrations through improved cleanliness, drinking water, public toilets, changing facilities, artificial ponds and better coordination between municipal departments.
Juhu Beach and Major Chhath Puja Locations in Mumbai
Major gatherings are expected at Madh-Marve, Juhu Chowpatty, Girgaon Chowpatty, Dadar Chowpatty and Banganga, where devotees traditionally assemble to perform prayers and religious rituals.
Committee representatives informed officials that Juhu Chowpatty alone attracts approximately five lakh devotees, highlighting the need for extensive arrangements to accommodate large congregations safely.
Organisers specifically requested adequate public toilets, separate changing rooms, clean drinking water and other essential facilities to ensure convenience for women, families and elderly devotees.
They also demanded additional artificial ponds wherever necessary, thorough cleaning of beaches several days before celebrations, and a dedicated platform for religious ceremonies at Girgaon Chowpatty.

BMC Single-Window Permission System and Safety Measures
The BMC announced plans to introduce a single-window permission system through its concerned ward offices, simplifying administrative procedures for committees organising Chhath Puja celebrations.
Municipal officials said nodal officers would be appointed at individual locations to coordinate civic services, address operational concerns and facilitate communication between organisers and departments.
The proposed arrangements include fire brigade deployment, CCTV surveillance, electrical lighting, mobile toilets, drinking water facilities, separate changing rooms and additional artificial ponds where required.
Representatives also requested municipal support for essential worship materials and related arrangements, emphasising that timely coordination would help prevent inconvenience during heavily attended celebrations.
Bhide assured organisers that Chhath Puja would receive civic support comparable to arrangements made for other major festivals, with particular attention to devotees’ safety.
The commissioner said the administration would prioritise cleanliness, basic infrastructure and coordination, although detailed site-specific deployment schedules and final facility numbers remain to be announced.
