Yamaha YZF-R2 Launch: Rs 2.30 Lakh Price, 204cc Engine, 149kg Weight and Key Rivals Explained
Yamaha Motor India has launched the YZF-R2 in India, introducing a new 204cc engine to its R-series, with a lighter chassis, multiple variants, and deliveries beginning September 2026.
Yamaha has launched the YZF-R2 in India at an introductory price of Rs 2.30 lakh (ex-showroom). Deliveries will begin in September 2026.
Yamaha Motor India has launched a new member of its R-series, the YZF-R2. The motorcycle is positioned above the R15 in the range and targets entry-level supersports buyers who want a little more performance.
Yamaha YZF-R2 Engine And Performance
It gets power from a newly developed 204cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine that produces 26.1 bhp and 19.1 Nm and is mated to a six-speed gearbox and a standard slip-and-assist clutch.
The new chassis, Yamaha says, is over 2 kg lighter than that of the R15, with no loss of rigidity, helping the bike to a kerb weight of 149 kg.
The Yamaha YZF-R2 weighs just 149 kg, making it the lightest motorcycle in its segment and a specification that could give it an edge over rivals such as the KTM RC 200.
On the hardware front, it gets a 282mm front disk brake, rear disk brake, inverted front forks, and a monoshock suspension setup. The chassis package is completed by 17-inch wheels.
At launch, the Yamaha YZF-R2 will be available in five colors: Metallic Black, Dark Bluish Gray, Matte White Pearl, Racing Blue and Metallic Gray reserved for the top variant.
The top-end variant costs Rs 2.53 lakh ex-showroom and gets the special Metallic Gray color scheme, fresh graphics and a quickshifter, while the Mid and M variants get quickshifters as standard.
Yamaha Motor India has begun accepting bookings for the FZ 25 at a refundable token amount of Rs 10,000, giving customers the freedom to book the motorcycle while retaining the option to change their purchase decision.

Yamaha R2 Design And R-Series Positioning
The design is similar to the familiar Yamaha R-series language, with a full fairing with layered bodywork, sleek LED lighting, daytime running lights, a sculpted fuel tank and a sharply styled tail section.
Yamaha had teased us with an R logo altered around the number two ahead of the launch of the YZF-R2, and Racing Blue was confirmed as one of the motorcycle’s colors cemented expectations around the YZF-R2.
Yamaha had said the motorcycle would stay closely related to the wider R-series, with design cues thought to be similar to the R9 through sharp fairings, LED lights and aerodynamic bodywork.
A smaller fuel tank, aerodynamic winglets and sharply shaped tail section for airflow were also cited by the company, although these were given as launch expectations before confirmation.
Yamaha's Indian supersport portfolio has historically centred on the YZF-R15 and its variants, while the R3 was previously sold in India but has since been discontinued.
Internationally, Yamaha's larger R-series includes the R6 Race, R7, R9 and R1 Race, giving the YZF-R2 a place within a broader supersport family that spans multiple performance levels.
Yamaha Motor India's Growth And India Strategy
At Yamaha, India is evolving from a domestic powerhouse to a world-class global hub, said Hajime Aota, Chairman, Yamaha Motor India, at the launch.
Aota also said Yamaha recorded 41 percent year-on-year growth during the first half of 2026 and intends to strengthen momentum during the festive season while expanding international exports.
Yamaha said the R15, MT-15 and XSR 155 combined showed 59 percent growth year-on-year in the first half, indicating continued demand for premium 150cc motorcycles.
The R15, launched in India in 2008, has crossed one million unit sales nationally, with Yamaha attributing that performance partly to the availability of multiple variants.
The YZF-R2, with its new engine, lighter chassis, 149kg weight, multiple variants and pricing, gives Yamaha a fresh proposition for buyers looking for a step beyond the R15.
Sprouts News will track Yamaha YZF-R2 deliveries, variant availability, ownership information, and market response to the motorcycle as it gets into customers’ hands from September 2026 onward.
