US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor has been mentioned as a possible replacement for Secretary of State Marco Rubio following Republican setbacks in the 2026 midterms, according to The Washington Sun. The report also linked Gor to the White House chief of staff and deputy secretary of state roles. Gor rejected the speculation, saying he had no interest in another position. The White House and State Department also dismissed the claims, and no leadership change has been announced.

Sergio Gor May Replace Marco Rubio as US Secretary of State After Midterm Setbacks, Report Says

Sergio Gor, the US Ambassador to India, has reportedly emerged as a potential candidate for senior positions in Donald Trump’s administration after the Republican Party’s losses during the 2026 midterm elections. But Gor and the White House have dismissed the speculation.

Speculation about Sergio Gor Marco Rubio as a successor has caught the eye in Washington after the Republican Party’s poor showing in the 2026 midterm elections, raising questions about possible leadership changes.

Gor is being looked at for a range of senior posts in President Donald Trump’s administration, The Washington Sun reported, citing 10 people familiar with internal discussions.

Options reported include replacing Marco Rubio as secretary of state, replacing Susie Wiles as White House chief of staff, or replacing Chris Landau as deputy secretary of state.

Gor is the U.S. Ambassador to India and a former senior White House aide and close ally of Trump. His growing clout has apparently extended beyond the traditional diplomatic duties.

Sergio Gor and Marco Rubio Replacement Speculation

The midterm results have fueled speculation about a possible reshuffle of the administration. Rubio is seen by some officials as someone who could eventually leave the Cabinet to prepare for a potential presidential bid in 2028 or 2032.

Meanwhile, Wiles' position is reported to be under review inside Trump's inner circle. Landau was also said to be considering leaving after a possible Republican loss of control of Congress and tough investigations.

But later Landau denied he had plans to leave the State Department, and told The Washington Sun he had never said he intended to resign.

Gor has strongly denied suggestions he is after promotion. He called the report “total and complete b******,” and said Rubio was the most qualified and accomplished secretary of state.

Gor said Rubio was irreplaceable and a close friend, and he had no interest in another position and had not discussed alternative roles with anyone.

White House and State Department Reject Leadership Change Reports

The speculation was also dismissed by the US State Department. Rubio and Gor are close friends with a strong professional relationship, Assistant Secretary for Global Public Affairs Dylan Johnson said.

Johnson dismissed the claims as rumours from unnamed sources. A White House official also dismissed the report as fake, and Gor was not interested in another position.

Rubio and Wiles were also praised by the official, who called their performances “phenomenal.” Yet such denials notwithstanding, Gor's increasing diplomatic visibility has caught the attention of Republicans and administration circles.

“The president loves the guy,” a Trump adviser told The Washington Sun, pointing to Gor’s history of bringing business deals to Trump before he entered government.

Sergio Gor's India Role and Diplomatic Influence

Since taking over as the US Ambassador to New Delhi in November 2025, Gor has played an important role in arranging a number of high-level visits, including those of Rubio, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, and then-Army Secretary Dan Driscoll.

In addition to being appointed special envoy, he will cover South and Central Asia. He has attended diplomatic engagements with senior foreign officials, including China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

Rubio has been in India twice this year, and the two officials have often travelled together. They also appeared together last week in Atlanta at a G20 summit.

Gor was a key player in Rubio's visit to Uzbekistan last month, supporting Washington's push to build ties with resource-rich Central Asian countries.

Gor was born in Uzbekistan during the Soviet Union era and has used his regional background and contacts in his diplomatic work.

Gor's Political Background and Cabinet Confirmation Challenges

Before joining the Trump administration, Gor spent nearly 10 years working on Capitol Hill, primarily for Republican Sen. Rand Paul. He also worked on Trump’s 2024 election bid.

At the White House Office of Presidential Personnel, Gor helped identify and vet candidates for thousands of political appointments across the federal government.

His publishing company has published Trump’s books, and he has especially close ties to Donald Trump Jr. Trump had praised Gor at his swearing-in ceremony as ambassador in the Oval Office.

His management style in New Delhi has also been scrutinised, with two people familiar with embassy operations alleging unusually tight control over personnel decisions, including the exits of career diplomats and local hires.

Rubio had earlier defended Gor's appointment, telling The New York Times that his access to the president made him an enormous asset for India and the State Department.

But getting a seat in the Cabinet would be even harder. Gore's nomination as ambassador was part of a larger package of nominees that all Senate Democrats voted against.

It is not yet known whether the possibilities that are being reported will lead to an actual appointment. Sprouts News will continue to track developments in Washington leadership, US-India relations, and the Trump administration’s diplomatic priorities.
